Abstract: The effects and mechanisms of pioneer plant on the purification of malodorous river water in phytoremediation tank were evaluated. According to the relationship between the major pollutants removal effect and the microbial community structure, which was investigated by ERIC-PCR fingerprinting, it was found that Pontederia cordata L had obvious effect on the pollutant removal, the removal efficiencies of CODCr, NH3-N and TP being 19.8%~69.4%, 18.2%~68% and 23.9%~77.2% higher than those of control group. Meanwhile, the three tanks planted with Pontederia cordata L had more abundant microbial species than those without hydrophytes. It also remarkably indicated that the diversity of the predominant bacteria at tillering stage was much greater than that at other stages and the combination of plant and compounding medium was the best technologic model in three different types.
